ONE POEM ...

WHAT:  An open poetry reading series meant to provide a venue for writers to share their work as well as the work of established writers they admire.

WHO: The series will be open to the central Mass community at large.

HOW: For every original poem a person reads they will be asked to compliment that poem by reading a poem of their choosing by another established and published writer: From Shakespeare to Stern, Bradstreet to Bukowski, Yeats to Young, Rumi to Rich and any and all between. If you have no original work to read but want to offer poems from writers you love, please join us. The reading will be held in round robin fashion (2 poems max each time) and the number of turns allowed for each person will be determined by the number of willing participants. We ask those who read to be sensitive to other attendees and not present overly long poems that will delay another’s turn. (One may also participate by attending and simply listening, not reading, if they so choose.)

WHERE: Merriam Gilbert Public Library, Main St. West Brookfield, Ma. In the Library Meeting Room upstairs. (Elevator accessible)

WHEN: September through May. Generally, readings will occur on the third Thursday of every month, though some schedule adjustments may have to be made around holidays.   Time: 4:00-6:00 pm:

WHY: To foster a creative community of writers and readers and to become exposed to writers beyond our own circles of interest. To celebrate what can be found in poems.

Cribbage                                                                  Monday, September 21st at 2:00 PM

Come join us for Cribbage on alternating Mondays at 2 PM.   Open to Cribbage players of all ages and experiences.  Registration is not required.

Origami Club                                                    Thursday, September 24th at 4:00 PM

By popular demand, we are turning our Origami workshops into a more regular Origami Club!  We will provide supplies and instruction books. Origami enthusiasts of all ages and experiences welcome to fold, share, and learn together!  Registration is not required.

 Art Displays  

Deborah Sacon

Deborah Sacon has been creating dynamic outdoor scenes in oil, acrylic and watercolor for most of her life. Her most recent landscapes, in water-soluble oil, are both abstract and representational.This exhibit will run thru October.

Quilt Display

A Quilt of 13 State Flowers created in 1976 is currently on display.   Sandra "Crockett" Swale won the quilt at a Summer raffle.  In 2025, she donated the quilt back to the Town of West Brookfield.

Ongoing Programs

WB Go Club                                                                                      Tuesdays at 5 PM  - 8 PM

Go is a game of quiet depth; played with simple black and white stones on a grid.  If you are curious about the game—or already play and want local board time—please join us.  The club is free, casual, and open to anyone. The club will supply all the equipment and walk newcomers through how the game works..
Registration is not required.

Knitting Group                                                                                   Wednesdays at 10 AM

The Knitting Group meets every Wednesday at 10:00 a.m.
Just drop in - no registration necessary.

Book Discussion Group

The Merriam-Gilbert Book Discussion Group meets monthly from 6:30-8pm.  New members are always welcome! Join us for lively book discussions.
